Anthea Bond

I must have been 9 or 10 years old when Anthea Ward came to live with my family in a huge converted warehouse on Vermont Street in South Central Los Angeles. She was a young 20 something Buddhist from Australia who owed a motorcycle. I was practically star struck and I fell in love with her instantly. I wanted to be as cool as she was.

She introduced me to Bowie, The Car's and Talking Heads. She introduced me to Buddhism and we would chant together. She was always very nice to me. She had this great deep laugh. She moved out of our house into her own tiny apartment a few blocks from Venice Beach.
Anthea loved Venice Beach. I have a lot of memories of hanging out on Venice Beach with Anthea. She was a photographer so my friends and I would model for her. She was with us when we took our first trip up to Twin Oaks.
When I gave birth to my first daughter, Arzel, at the tender age of 16, Anthea was there with us. She was at both of my weddings. She never missed a wedding.
In August of 2001, Anthea joined us for a night when we were camping in Lake Isabella. We had a great time. In December of 2001 I was unable to see Anthea due to a "family dispute" but I did speak to her on the phone. I told her how much I loved her and how much she had influenced me. I told her how much I appreciated her and how I wanted to see her more. She told me about her new apartment on Venice beach.
During "Saturday Night Live" on January 26, 2002 my mom called to tell me that Anthea had been killed in a flood in Maui. A few days later, at the request of Anthea's parents, my parents and I went to Venice to help pack up her apartment. The "alter" that her mother gave to me sits in my room. It reminds me of her often. Anthea was like a cool fairy godmother. Anthea always said she was a Miehi. I remember once when I was younger I asked her who her favorite band was and she said "Well, the Miehi band of course!"
